Essex CHIPS supports the Black Lives Matter movement. All youth should have the right to exercise choice in their own lives, including the choice to protest the social injustices and insanity they see before them. As adults, we strive to engage, inspire, and empower youth, yet at times such as now, they are often the ones who are engaging, inspiring, and empowering us. We should support, encourage, and join youth striving to combat the racial injustice that has for so long plagued our country.
Racism and oppression are terribly real in America. Black lives matter. The abhorrent murder of George Floyd has hopefully pushed us, young and old, to dismantle the systemic racism of our society.
We encourage parents to discuss these systemic issues with their children. If you are looking for a way to start the discussion, reading is an excellent opportunity. Attached to this posting you will find a list of books about race and racism for youth. You can find more information under the "Resources for Racial Justice" tab on our Resources page.
We encourage parents and community members to share their own resources for racial justice here as well. Thank you!
